Ragged

Ragged breath invades ragged lungs
while gaping mouth hangs open.
Sunken cheeks are impossibly still,
like a waxwork with stubble.
Slender, papery fingers encircle mine
as my heart skips a beat.
Will his next breath be his last or
can I will just one more?
